Cat Spay

This is the surgical removal of the female genital organs – the ovaries and uterus.

Following your catʼs spay please read the following- it may answer some of the questions that you may have.

  • There may be a shaved area on one your catʼs forelegs – this is where the anaesthesia would have been injected and this is totally normal. There may be slight bruising in the area but this will soon fade. The hair should grow back after a few weeks.
  • Your cat may appear drowsy after the operation – this is most likely to be due to the anaesthetic and will soon wear off. Also please note that your cat will have been given painkillers to help with the pain post-op and this too may contribute to the drowsiness.
  • Your cat may cough occasionally after the operation – this is most likely to be due to the tube that was placed in your catʼs windpipe to facilitate breathing while under anaesthetic. If there is a cough then it should clear up within a couple of days.
  • Sometimes your cat may not feel like eating straight after the operation. This is ok, but please make sure that she eats the next day.
  • Please keep your cat indoors after the surgery, if possible, up to suture removal.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

  • If your cat is repeatedly sick or excessively tired or lethargic after the operation – please contact us.
  • DO NOT allow your cat to lick the stitched area. If you are unable to stop this from happening then please contact us.
  • There may be swelling after the operation – this is normal. However if there is excessive swelling or bleeding from the area that is causing you concern please contact us asap.

STITCHES

Any stitches involved with the operation will need to be removed after the wound has healed sufficiently. We would normally ask you to return to the surgery for suture removal 14 days post operation. Sometimes we use subcutaneous sutures which leave nothing to be removed but we still like to check these at 14 days please.

Our veterinarians are all experienced general practitioners with a broad knowledge and
understanding of animal health, illness and injury.
