Synulox is the trade name for Clavulanate Potentiated Amoxycillin. Clavulanate is a beta lactamase inhibitor. Some bacteria produce beta lactamase to build resistance to amoxicillin. The addition of Clavulanate therefore helps the Amoxicillin kill a broader spectrum of bacteria. It is a remarkably good broad spectrum antibiotic which has stood the test of time. It is still after many years our first choice antibiotic in many serious infections.
It will occasionally cause vomiting and diarrhoea and other than the rare case of allergy to penicillin there seems to be very few other side effects. It should not be used in small furry animals – hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, chinchillas and rabbits.
